I love the wonderful juxtaposition of the beautiful old and new buildings in the in this iconic little Auckland Lane. Based just off Queen street it’s very well known and is home to the famous ‘Occidental Pub’ and the ‘Queens Ferry Hotel’.
Vulcan Lane is a historic pedestrian laneway in downtown Auckland linking Queen Street and High Street. First mapped as a muddy service track in 1841, it gained its name from the Vulcan Forge smithy set up in 1846 and was pedestrianized in 1968.Landmarks include, The Queens Ferry Hotel and the Occidental Hotel.
In the mid 1800s the largely pedestrian byway was an area of artisans' houses, workshops, grog shops and various merchants. A fire in 1850 destroyed much of the area. Afterwards Vulcan Lane developed a commercial character influenced by its position between the old and new streets of inner Auckland.
Often in my paintings I include figures from popular culture in an effort to ‘lift places up’ and force the viewer to look at places they see often in a different way. They add value, interest and a sense of whimsy. In this painting I have included ‘Neo’ from the Matrix movie. The way the buildings seem to fit together from this viewpoint, it almost seems like an imagined place or ‘not quite real’ which is why the character of Neo was a fitting choice to me.
