The Roxy Cinema in the Wellington suburb of Miramar is an Art Deco movie palace that originated as the Capitol Theatre in 1928.
The cinema has strong ties to Wellington's film pedigree, having been spearheaded by local industry heavyweights including Oscar-winning film editor Jaime Selkirk and Wētā Workshop co-founder Tania Rodger.
The interior blends 1930s Hollywood glamour with sci-fi flair, featuring sculptures and designs crafted by Wētā Workshop artists and award winning restaurant CoCo.
Named the Roxie Theater, “Roxie” after the palatial Roxy Theater in New York City, which had opened in 1927.
