The MLC Building is located at 231 Lambton Quay. It was built by contractors W.M. Angus Ltd replacing the 19th-century Central Hotel and was designed by the notable architectural firm Mitchell & Mitchell. 

In 1953 a signature clock was installed in the tower, famously unveiled three months too late for Queen Elizabeth II's coronation. In 1985  

In 1996 after sitting under-utilized, the building was purchased by the St James Group and converted into inner-city apartments.

The building is officially classified as a Category 1 Historic Place by Heritage New Zealand. It is distinctively recognizable by its honey-colored faience tiling, streamlined curved corners, and dominant corner clock tower.
